Summary

Camera file (10:40) from a session in Kloyzenburg (Cluj), 17 May 2013; the interviewee is not named in the index. An elderly man talks with Kerler about the persecution of Jews, camps he saw, and Transnistria. He then talks at length about a sick acquaintance, Grünfeld (?), and the papers needed to claim German compensation, and ends with the languages he speaks and the Saturday minyan in Kloyzenburg.

Stretches

00:00–05:33

The informant talks with Kerler about the deportation of Jews to Transnistria from Moldavia and Romania. He describes guards who mistreated Jews and camps he saw in Bessarabia (?) and elsewhere, where prisoners were beaten and starved and he could not help them. Kerler asks the names of places near Pechora, Bershad' and Pulchin (?), and the informant gives some village names that are unclear in the transcript. He says he was in a detachment with non-Jews and with Jewish companions, and that men did not talk about what they saw.

04:36–10:40

The informant and Kerler talk about an old acquaintance, Grünfeld (?), who is now very sick and weak and whom Kerler's team has visited. The informant recalls meeting him in Kloyzenburg and going to the synagogue together. He recounts the postwar German compensation for Jews, which required papers proving where one had been, such as Transnistria, and the difficulty his friend had in documenting his time in a camp. Asked what language they speak together, he names Yiddish, Romanian and Hungarian. He ends by mentioning the Saturday minyan in the small synagogue, with the big holidays held elsewhere.
