Summary

Informal conversation in Yiddish, with English and some Polish, among scholars and participants of a Yiddish event in Warsaw, 17 June 2018; the index names Jacob "Kobi" Weitzner and Alexandra Krol. It is not a structured interview. The talk moves from Yiddish authenticity and teaching, through Japanese matchmaking and Fiddler on the Roof and a Yiddish-speaking actor, to a colleague, the dates of an event, translations and Hebrew writers, and plans for further recording sessions.

Stretches

00:00–02:05

Talk about acquaintances in Wrocław, including a dentist and a man named Robak, and about a bottle of fruit liqueur. They discuss a man reading a feuilleton, and the view that people who cite or tell stories in Yiddish do not give the real Yiddish taste. Also covered: reading Sholem Aleichem on Tevye and his daughters, and teaching American students with no interest in literature or Yiddish.

02:05–05:45

They discuss matchmaking in Japan, where about half of marriages are still arranged, and a Japanese actor performing Yiddish material seen on YouTube. They go on to Radensky (?) the actor, who is said to speak Litvak Yiddish. They also mention Tevye, a song translated into Yiddish, and the difference between actors who rely on ready-made mannerisms and those who build a role creatively.

05:45–10:30

Remarks on acting and on a Polish phrase used in a child's speech to her father. The talk turns to the Tevye story: the dowry, the rich man seeking a scholar for his daughter, and how the film differs from the play because of Marxism. They mention the rebbe and the dream story, and an English article about it that someone found online.

10:24–13:07

They talk about inviting a colleague, David Katz, to the festival. He is praised for his Yiddish and Lithuanian Yiddish and for his historical knowledge. The speakers discuss a supposed father complex and compare it to a scholar called Arie Zaks (?), and mention the poet father of someone in their field.

13:07–16:02

They discuss the best months for holding the event: May and June, since winter is difficult, and the end of the university term in America. They work out that 27 May corresponds to 4 June (?), and recall the founding of the Israeli state and its first stamp. Haifa, Rosh Hanikra (?), a seaside town and a German-style house with a wooden veranda are mentioned.

15:59–19:59

They return to the children and say that one of them does not speak Yiddish but understands it, and that German is also not easy for them. The father is described as a translator of works including Hitler's, and academic reading of such texts is discussed. They go on to a Hebrew writer, possibly Buber or Agnon, who knew some Yiddish and wrote in Hebrew. Burial of sacred texts in a geniza is also touched on.

20:05–23:22

Winding down the session. The speakers talk about making an audio and video production in Yiddish and about a Czech-born Jew who died. They discuss a non-Jewish scholar who wrote Yiddish verse, take photographs of the group, and plan another weekend session at Szrodborowo (?) or a return to the museum.
