Summary

Recording of Mr Solomon in Jerusalem, 7 January 2018 (index), a camera video track and the first of two consecutive files. The elderly man has difficulty following Kerler's Yiddish and answers hesitantly, often drifting into Hungarian-influenced speech. He speaks about his yeshiva years, a family killed in the war, an uncle in Budapest, his father's prayer and tefillin, and Purim. Kerler also asks about words and sings or recites bits of folk songs.

Stretches

00:00–01:34

Opening exchange in which the informant has trouble understanding Kerler's questions about where he was born and about his childhood. Kerler states that he understands only Yiddish and asks him to speak about his childhood in Yiddish. The answers are unclear.

01:43–06:15

The informant says he studied in a yeshiva in a small town in Romania whose name is given as Skrahayt (?). He talks about Satmar and its rebbe, the yeshiva there and the Satmar community, which he calls a great yeshiva. Kerler asks about the lullaby-like song about the yeshiva bocher and about the term for 'several years' (?) and the word 'kupas' (?). The stretch also mentions Yavialish (?) and the Hasidic rebbes of Sfinka (?) and Shvinker (?).

06:15–13:38

Kerler asks how he ate in the yeshiva. The informant says he was there some years (five, then three years?) and describes how the yeshiva supplied food. He lists his murdered family (father Shmuel Eliezer (?), mother Rivka, Esther and others) and mentions his daughter. He also speaks about Hasidic rebbes (Yavialish (?), Shvinker, a rebbe taken to Satmar) and a rebbe who ate only what came from his own household.

13:38–15:00

Kerler asks whether he remembers a song in Hungarian about a Salka kakeshmar (?). The informant says that song was not known in his home.

15:00–20:16

Kerler asks where the father prayed and how many pairs of tefillin he laid. The informant gives unclear answers about his father's dress (a fur hat or a hat), the yeshiva and the house where his father prayed. His mother's name is given as Esther.

20:16–22:34

Kerler asks about food, including the word 'bundlekh' (?), and sings the beginning of a song about bundlekh on weekdays. The informant does not know it and says the popular language was Hungarian. Kerler also asks about the term 'shindelishl' (?) for someone who knows little; the informant does not recognise it.

22:34–26:48

The informant discusses difficulties of understanding each other and then talks about an uncle (the father's brother) in Budapest named Moteni Miklosh (?), who changed his name from Weiss. Kerler asks what he did, and the answer concerns grain and work on the fields; Kerler asks the Hungarian word for 'white'. A picture in Satmar is mentioned.

26:51–29:50

Kerler asks about Purim in the village and what was eaten and sung. The informant gives little (Purim and Hanukkah mentioned; something made). Kerler recites or sings a Purim rhyme, 'a gutn Purim malekh', and the informant repeats it.
