Summary

Recording in Warsaw on 12 June 2017, the last day of the expedition, with the Polish writer Józef Hen. The conversation is in Yiddish mixed with Polish and Russian. It ends with a discussion of poetry versus prose and a Russian remark about Gorky.

Stretches

00:00–02:41

Kerler introduces Hen as a Polish writer on the last day of the expedition. They discuss the Swiss writer Max Frisch, who was jealous of Hen for several reasons, among them censorship and Hen's being a Jew. Frisch's young wife Marian (?) is mentioned, as is a Friedrich Dürrenmatt (?), and the two writers spoke English together.

02:41–04:59

The talk turns to vodka and food in Polish and Russian: a drink of vodka with a bite of food, a tomato-and-vodka mixture, and a Russian anecdote about a waiter. Much of it is in Polish and Russian and is hard to follow.

04:59–05:49

Kerler asks Hen what good has happened lately. Hen mentions the prize he received, which was a great joy, and says he is trying to get his old books reprinted.

05:49–09:33

Hen says he never felt the urge to write poetry, but he did write some satirical verse during the war and printed part of it. He sees himself as a prose writer and talks about prose versus poetry, and about the Hebrew origin of Yiddish words such as milkhome (?) and mamoshesdik (?). He also mentions reading Gorky, and the recording ends mid-conversation.
